History of Zagreb
Zagreb began as two separate settlements: Kaptol(founded in the 11th century) and Gradec (founded in the 13th century). It was destroyed by fire and the plague in the 17th and 18th centuries before emerging as an important cultural center in the 18th century. It has been the capital of independent Croatia since 1991.
